Hamburg Central Station
Illuminated Landmark for One of Europe’s Busiest Railway Stations
Hamburg Central Station is one of Europe’s busiest railway stations, serving hundreds of thousands of passengers every day.
As part of the refurbishment of the S1/S3 platform area, 25 existing concrete columns were transformed into illuminated architectural landmarks using LUCEM® STARLIGHT® light transmitting concrete panels.
Each side of every column was clad with a custom-manufactured STARLIGHT® panel. One panel on each column features the word „HAUPTBAHNHOF“, individually handcrafted by inserting hundreds of 1 mm optical glass fibers into the concrete. The illuminated lettering provides subtle wayfinding while creating a unique architectural identity for the station.
The project demonstrates how existing public infrastructure can be upgraded without altering its structural integrity, combining durable architectural concrete with integrated lighting and custom-made craftsmanship.
Every STARLIGHT® panel was individually manufactured in the LUCEM workshop in Aachen, Germany.

Architectural Impact
The project illustrates how light transmitting concrete can transform functional railway infrastructure into a recognizable architectural feature. Rather than adding conventional signage, light itself becomes part of the material, creating orientation, atmosphere and identity through architecture.
